More supermarkets back GM-free food

WAITROSE and the Co-op have become the latest supermarkets to declare themselves against genetically modified (GM) food.

The two chains announced yesterday (Wednesday) that their own-label brands will become “GM-free”.

The announcements came as Sainsburys and Marks & Spencer launched a Europe-wide scheme to phase out foods containing GM ingredients and derivatives.

But there are doubts whether any store can guarantee to supply GM-free products because of the difficulties in finding soya supplies that are 100% GM-free.
