New development for Lake District

AFTER three years of planning, a Cumbria farming family has launched a new food processing and marketing business.
Well-known livestock producer John Geldard, of Levens, near Kendal, is creating the Plumgarths Farm Shop and the Lakelands Food Park, which is expected to open at the end of the year, in converted farm buildings on a site near Kendal.
A large proportion of 14m visitors who visit the Lake District each year drive past. Marketing experts in the scheme say turnover could reach 1m within three years.
Plans were unveiled at an official launch last week. “The Plumgarths Food Park offers a new opportunity to farmers and rural food businesses in the Lake District,” said Mr Geldard.
“Were looking for several local businesses, new or existing, to come forward and develop their own speciality foods within this purpose-built complex.”
The scheme has attracted funding from the governments England Rural Development Plan and local Leader project cash.
