New food agency will be independent
The new Food Standards Agency was given a guarantee to be consumer-driven, independent and accountable, by David Clark, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
The principles behind the agency would include open and transparent processes, protection of public health and clear and consistent action. Clark said the agency would reflect the variety of interests involved in food but remain independent of sectional interests.
The government is currently carrying out a consultation on the shape of the new agency and an interim report is expected in the next fortnight. It expects to publish proposals in a White Paper in the autumn and a draft bill in the spring of 1998.
