New Handley sale draws select entry
SOUTH-WEST Holstein breeders congratulated themselves on a successful new venture last week when the first Handley Harvest sale saw prices reach 4100gns.
Conceived by a trio of well-known breeders, the sale drew a select entry of 95 cattle from the Whipton, Barrina, Goldfields, Lyddon/Lydace and Sanchris herds comprising high type and production from internationally famous cow families. It is now intended to become an annual event.
Top call came for Whipton Jed Patricia VG86 2yr from the herd of Salisbury breeder Martin Alford. This April-calved heifer is out of a Starbuck dam and was bought by Mrs D W Beer for her Coldridge herd in Crediton.
The sale, hosted by Stuart and Di Buckland, Sixpenny Handley, Salisbury, saw another from the same herd, Whipton Prelude Tammy, make the days second highest price of 2900gns.
Bred out of a Lindy dam, this second calver gave 10,435kg as a heifer, a lactation worth £2259. Buyer was the W D Carr Partnership, Brighton.
Whipton entries accounted for seven out of the eight top prices, ranging from 2000 to 4100gns. Breaking the run was Barrina Limelight Zany 9th VG85, a June calved heifer from local breeder Barry Greens consignment by Chrichel Limelight, a Starbuck son.
She had a Ped Index of 545, PIN +£13 and ITEM +£17 and made 2800gns via a phone bid from Scottish breeder R J Wilson.
