New herbicide on offer for peas
PEA growers will have access to a new herbicide next spring offering more cost-effective control than a conventional programme of pre-emergence spray and late post-emergence follow-up.
Impuls, a mix of bentazone and pendimethalin formerly known as BAS572H, offers both contact and residual action.
"It fills a gap between pre-emergence and late post-em treatments," says BASFs Andrew Jones. Cleavers, poppies and volunteer oilseed rape are among the wide range of broad-leaved weeds controlled. Until now pendimethalin has not had post-emergence approval on the crop, he notes.
According to the PGROs Cathy Knott, Impuls, applied when the peas are at the 1-2 node stage, should provide a better chance of achieving good results under a range of conditions. "Growers tend to leave their weed control too late. But there needs to be moisture for the pendimethalin to work."
