New project to improve milk processing skills

A NEW project to help farmers regain lost milk processing skills and add value to their milk has been launched in the Peak District.

The scheme will provide training in business and marketing techniques, IT and health and hygiene. Grants are available to assist with new ventures. It will also teach farmers how to make modern dairy products.

"There are lots of dairy farms in the Peak District but with milk going to be processed elsewhere a lot of traditional knowledge and skills have been lost," says dairy farmer Sue Prince.

"And our loss has proved to be others profit. While were producing milk at a cost of 21p/litre, and being paid between 16p and 18p/litre, we see retailers putting huge mark-ups on dairy products."

The scheme, supported by the Peak District National Park Authority and the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, kicks off with a seminar that will be followed by up to 20 practical sessions.
