New varieties with OSR
OILSEED rape was drilled in the last week of August, 20ha with new hybrid Royal and 25ha of Recital. Both are new varieties to the farm. "Normally we home save but the Escort wasnt suitable this time."
Wheat drilling will start Sept 10-15 with some heavy land at 200 seeds/sq m but the main first wheats will go in from the last week of September at 350-360 seeds, followed by a reduced area of second wheat by mid-October.
Main variety will be Claire, with the remainder probably Savannah. Cereal seed is bought in but only a third of this years requirement was booked at the end of August, some C2 Sibutol-dressed Claire at £220/t.
"We used Jockey on some second wheat Claire last year and it was a big disappointment, because it didnt yield and died off earlier than the first wheat Charger." An ARC report suggesting that the dressing would be a waste of time has been proved right, he says.
