NFUS presidential hopefuls profiled

THE two men competing to lead the National Farmers Union of Scotland (NFUS) are profiled in The Herald today (Monday).

Jim Walker, 38, believes that reform of the European farm subsidy system will encourage farmers to get out of the commodity market and start working on quality.

Peter Chapman, 49, believes the way ahead lies in reducing costs and ensuring that primary producers get a bigger percentage of the price paid by consumers for food.

Current NFUS president George Lyon is giving up his post to stand as a candidate for the Scottish parliament.
