No challenge to Gill

TWO potential rivals say they will not challenge Ben Gills bid to win another two-year term as NFU leader. Union deputy president Tim Bennett and Devon council delegate Richard Haddock said they would not stand for president in elections next February.

Mr Bennett said he would remain loyal to Mr Gill even though he knows at least one NFU county branch will nominate him for president. Mr Bennett told FARMERS WEEKLY: "I want to be president one day but I want to make it absolutely clear that I have no intention of running against Ben."

Mr Haddock said he would not stand for the presidency either.

Mr Gill, who was elected president in 1997, has told FW that he intends to stand again. He could be challenged by vice-president Michael Paske who has refused to rule a leadership bid .

The deadline for nominations is Jan 8. &#42
