No movement in cattle values

By FWi staff

LIVEWEIGHT cattle values are static at markets throughout England and Wales and are expected to remain this way for the foreseeable future.

Cattle prices averaged 92.22p/kg at markets around the country yesterday (Wednesday).

Steers averaged 94.34p, heifers averaged 89.07p/kg and young bulls averaged 93.11p/kg.

Sue Fisher, an economist with the Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC), expects prices to stay largely the same throughout the rest of the year.

Until now, many farmers had feared that a flood of finished cattle coming out of retention would bring prices down.

There are in fact fewer cattle about now than there were in January and February, according to MLC statistics.

Overall trade has been stronger than originally forecast, and the processing area has performed well.

Supply has been similar to that seen in 1998 and some analysts think it could tighten in the second half of this year.
