NSA petitions Cunningham over live exports

THE National Sheep Association (NSA) is to petition Dr Jack Cunningham,
agriculture minister, over his attitude to the live export trade.

A letter will include the point that the NSA shares the view that stock
should be slaughtered close to where they are reared. But it will point out that,
with a major rationalisation within the abattoir industry, this is becoming
increasingly difficult.

NSA chief executive John Thorley was highly critical of the attitude in
Whitehall to agriculture in general. He also said the NSA would back a lifetime
ban on any exporter who flouted new transport regulations now in force throughout
the European Union.
