OSR could help potato disease

By Charles Abel

GROWING oilseed rape over-winter before chopping and incorporating ahead of potato planting could help combat soil-borne rhizoctonia.

According to new research conducted by Scottish Agricultural Colleges, the effect could be caused by glucosinolates.

These are substances produced by oilseed rape that interfere with animal feed quality.

In field tests this year residues limited canker development. Harvest results are now awaited to assess the full effectiveness.
