OSR does better than barley

CONTRACTOR Derek Welford has combined 120ha (300 acres) and is about half way through harvest, at Easby near Middlesborough on heavy soil.

Oilseed rape varieties Pronto and Elite have yielded about 3t/ha (1.25t/acre) which is average for the farm. But Alligator yielded very poor.

“There were very poor winter conditions.” The crop had been combined at around 12% moisture.

“The oilseed rape did better than barley.” Regina and Heligan yielded about 5t/ha (2t/acre), whereas the farm normally expects 7.4t/ha (3t/acre).

“There was too many green grains, water meant there was a lot of late growth. If the green bits are discounted it came off very dry at 14%.”

The recent hot weather has brought all the crops on, and he says they are well ahead for the time of year. “We had to press on at every opportunity.”

Wheat is about 10 days off, weather permitting. There has been an inch of rain in the last 24 hours.

The area to combine is smaller this year as more land is set-a-side due to poor drilling conditions.
