OSR failing at field margins

Question

WHY does winter oilseed rape fail to grow within half a metre of headlands in the north-east? Would double sowing the outer run of the headland solve this problem?

Response

Jim McLaren, Cults Farm, Cupar, Fife

Answer

OSR fails in the field margins due to flea-beetle attack in the autumn, when the crop is coming through the ground. Seed dressings can help prevent this, but we have found that over the past few years a spray of cypermethrin is necessary.
