Panamas bananas lost despite end of strike

PANAMANIAN banana workers have called off their strike at the plantation owned by Chiriqui Land Company, a Chiquita subsidiary. But the abandonment of strike action is too late to prevent the years production being virtually completely wiped out.

An estimated $14 million was lost in exports during the 57-day strike. Now severe delays are inevitable before fruit production resumes because of the lack of maintenance at the Armuelles plantation.

The strike was mostly over the fate of 250 dockworkers who will lose their jobs as the company redirects exports to another port on Panamas Atlantic coast.
