Paxman to front farm debate

NEWSNIGHT anchor Jeremy Paxman will chair a public meeting aimed at giving ordinary consumers a chance to debate the future of farming.
Mr Paxman will preside over a discussion with a panel of experts including farmers leader Ben Gill and Northern Foods chairman Lord Haskins.
Other members of the panel are Sir John Krebs, chairman of the Food Standards Agency (FSA)s, and food writer and restaurateur Prue Leith.
The chief executive of the Environment Agency, Baroness Young, and Kevin Hawkins, director of communications for Safeway, will also be speaking.
The event, organised by the Food Standards Agency, takes place at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre on Tuesday (6 November).
The FSA said the debate would feed into its submission to the governments policy commission on the future of food and farming.
The commission has been asked to advise the government on ways to “create a sustainable, competitive and diverse farming and food sector”.
Its terms of reference include “advancing environmental, economic, health and animal welfare goals” consistent with the Common Agricultural Policy.
Guests will have an opportunity to read the food agencys draft response to the commission, and their views will feed into the final report.
