Philippines alert against pig virus

HEALTH officials in the Philippines yesterday alerted pig farmers about the virus that has killed 55 people in Malaysia.

The bureau of quarantine has stepped up vigilance at ports to prevent livestock infected by the Japanese encephalitis virus entering the country.

The virus is transmitted from infected pigs to humans by mosquitoes.

Health officials are telling farmers to use mosquito nets on farms and to maintain hygiene standards.
