PIC freezes gilt prices

By Simon Wragg

PIG breeder PIC has frozen the cost of replacement gilts to encourage producers to invest.

The company had initially intended to lift the gilt price from 130-136/head – depending on breeding line and weight – once the all-average pig price (AAPP) crossed 91p/kg deadweight.

Although that has now happened, the suggested increase of 30/gilt is unlikely to be introduced until July to help farmers who are still facing significant financial pressure after two years of losses.

The company will increase the price being paid to its multipliers by about 20 for breeding gilts which are sold.
