THE British Pig Executive has announced its support for a new approach to training within the pig industry.
BPEX will work towards a new training package for pig farmers aimed at reducing the cost of production and helping them compete.
Research in the UK and Australia shows that targeted training can help improve efficiency at all stages in the production process, said BPEX.
The package has been put forward for joint funding with MAFF under the Agricultural Development Scheme.
Supported by the National Pig Association it will involve the Meat and Livestock Commission, the University of Aberdeen, The Garth Veterinary Group and the Agskills initiative in eastern England.
BPEX will also support a new National Pig Association project on Risk Management, aimed at allowing producers to reduce the risk exposure of their businesses.
Richard Campbell, BPEX chairman said the new approach to training should help farmers compete more effectively.
“Managing risk will be very important in an increasingly international marketplace.”
