Pig know-how deal signed with China
NEWSHAM Hybrid Pigs of Amotherby, North Yorkshire, has signed a long-term agreement to supply technical expertise to one of Chinas major agricultural provinces, Shandong.
The deal follows a recent visit to Newsham by a 16-strong delegation of Chinese agriculturalists and officials led by the provinces vice-governor, Mr Chen Yanming.
The Chinese decided to use the company to establish a large-scale breeding operation in Shandong because of its proven track record in lean genetics.
A delegation from the North Yorks company, led by chairman Ian Brisby, will shortly pay a return visit Shandong to determine the size and type of breeding organisation needed and to advise on technical requirements such as management systems, training and AI.
"I regard the deal as a rare compliment from a nation which was one of the first to understand pig genetics and started raising pigs for domestic consumption more than 5000 years ago," said Mr Brisby.
Shandong currently processes 25m pigs a year – twice the UK total.
