Pig membership is cut
ASSURED British Pigs is slashing its membership charge for the year starting June 1 by almost 50%.
Marcus Wood, the schemes manager, said existing members of the assurance service, whom he reckoned produced 90% of the pigs in England and Wales, would benefit from a £100 deduction in fees. The average producer paid £225, he added.
"We have always said the scheme would be run to cover its costs, not to create a surplus." The one-off discount was made possible by the forced reduction in the number of inspection visits during the foot-and-mouth crisis. *
