Pig summit comes up with six-point plan

INDUSTRY leaders have agreed on a six-point action plan for the pig industry over the next decade.

The plan was agreed at a two-day Pig Industry Summit opened by agriculture minister Nick Brown.

The summit – was organised by the British Pig Association, the Meat and Livestock Commission and the NFU – was attended by producers, processors and retailers.

During the summit the challenges and opportunities facing the pig industry were discussed and key points made for specific and collective action.

Summit chairman, Professor Norman Coward, said that the event had been a unique and valuable event.

“It was very encouraging that key leaders came together and agreed concrete action to take a troubled industry forward.”

The six-point plan agreed:

  • To further develop the British Pig Meat Quality Standard so as to capture more of the British market and develop exports
  • To benchmark the industry nationally and internationally in order to identify and communicate industry best practice throughout the supply chain and to cut costs and increase competitiveness
  • To extend the range of market information and improve its exchange throughout the industry
  • To develop new products, particularly in the catering sector, to maximise and balance carcass usage
  • To explore new strategic alliances, new contracts and ways of managing risks such as futures contracts
  • To improve price transparency in the market
