Pleased with Madrigal in Suffolk

CHARLES MATHIESON, partner in W A Howes and Son at Norton, near Bury St Edmonds in Suffolk, has had encouraging oilseed rape yields.

“Were pleased with oilseed rape.” Madrigal yielded 4t/ha (1.6t/acre), which is close to the five year average for the farm.

Pearl and Regina have yielded 6.25t/ha (2.5t/acre), which is slightly below the average for the farm. The quality is good enough for malting. There is still a bit more Regina to combine.

Soil on the farm varies from clay to sandy loam. The wheat should be ready when the weather has cleared up and they have had a pre-harvest spray of roundup to finish it off, but no surrounding farms have started wheat yet.
