Plug in for farm policy indicators

NOT sure whether your farm meets the new sustainability indicators promoted by the government? A free audio tape from LEAF could help.

Produced in conjunction with the University of Hertfordshires Agriculture and Environment Research Unit the 30min cassette, backed by DEFRA, aims to raise awareness of the 35 newly agreed indicators.

The government is increasingly interested in using such indicators to measure industry performance against its policies, notes LEAFs Caroline Drummond.

The sustainability indicators are grouped under the broad headings of economy, farm management, conservation and input/resource use.

The tape uses interviews with four farmers to provide a context in which to interpret the indicators on real working farms, says Ms Drummond.

Since the indicators are only pilots, there will be a chance for farmers to have an input in developing them, she adds.
