Potential for organic eggs

EXCESSIVE demand over supply means that there is significant potential to expand organic poultry meat and egg production in the UK.

According to a newly-published report by the Welsh Institute of Rural Studies (WIRS) at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, prices for organic eggs and table birds are up to 50% higher than those for free range produce.

Despite this, organic poultry production was the least developed organic sector in the UK in 1996, with only 50 of the 820 certified organic producers having poultry enterprises.

The report, which includes advice on sourcing and rearing of stock, housing, nutrition and animal health, is available priced £15 from Nic Lampkin, at WIRS, University of Wales, Aberystwyth, SY23 3AL (01970-622248). &#42
