A PUBLIC/PRIVATE partnership is to fund Norfolks Broadland Flood Alleviation Scheme.
This will be only the second such scheme to be jointly funded by government and private business.
The project involves a partnership between the Environment Agency (EA) and its private sector partner, Broadland Environmental Services Ltd, will aim to improve 240km of flood banks throughout the Broadland.
Speaking at the schemes launch on Wednesday (26 September), Minister for Flood and Coastal Defence Elliot Morley said, “This is an area of significant economic and environmental importance.
“Existing defences protect approximately 1700 properties and about 21,300ha of land.”
“This contract represents a major commitment by the Government and Environment Agency to effective flood defences in the area,” he said.
Under the scheme, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) will contribute approximately 63 million to the 100m cost of the project.
The project will cover the first 20 years of an agreed 255m strategy.
