Priests eager to evict farmers
By FWi staff
A FARMING family from Co Durham is set to lose their farm because of a proposed 5 million leisure development by a college of Roman Catholic priests.
Ushaw Priest Training College, near the City of Durham, has initial backing from Derwentside District Council for a country hotel and 18-hole golf course.
The college says it has to develop the site because of a drastic fall in the numbers of young men wanting to become priests.
But the Whitfield family, who are tenants of Ushaw College Farm, object to the scheme and have widespread local support.
They farmily, it has worked for the last quarter of a century, strongly dispute the colleges claims that the farm is no longer viable.
