Princess Royal backs GM crops

By FWi staff

THE Princess Royal, outgoing president of the British Society, has claimed that genetically modified crops could help feed the world.

She said the crops, such as vitamin A fortified rice, could benefit the developing world in a period when it was increasingly difficult to feed a growing population.

The Princess Royal said research should be encouraged with the necessary safeguards while each application should be considered on its merits.

This cautious endorsement of GM technology is at odds with the anti-GM views of her brother the Prince of Wales.
