Producers to lobby WHO on tobacco
THE International Tobacco Growers Association will meet the World Health Organisation (WHO) next week in a bid to convince the UN agency that its campaign against tobacco could destroy the livelihoods of farmers in developing nations.
The WHO has pledged to reduce smoking-related diseases by discouraging tobacco consumption, and its plans include a global ban on tobacco advertising and sponsorship.
The agency also aims to dissuade farmers from producing tobacco and encourage them to move to other crops.
