Producers vote for levy

PIG producers have brought a four-month debate to a conclusion by voting to keep the 65p a pig promotion levy.

According to the National Pig Association, shows of hands at recent regional meetings suggested most farmers wanted to keep it.

A survey by the association also showed strong support (91%), although this was restricted to 94 producers representing 45,000 sows. One reason for keeping the levy was "an inherent mistrust" of processors.

The NPA says the general view is that BPEX should examine how promotion money is spent. Improving the supply chain is strong contender. &#42
