Rain hits US walnut crop

US WALNUT production is expected to fall by 20% in the 1998-99 season because rain disrupted the crop last year.

Total output is expected to reach 199,580 tonnes, some 18% lower than the previous year but 6% above the figure for 1996-97.

US walnut exports are still expected to rise to 105,000 tonnes this season.

China is expected to increase walnut output by 2% to 255,000 tonnes this season, but exports are expected to decline because of strong domestic demand.
