RBST semen collection

THE Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) will begin collecting semen from sheep and goats recognised by the trust in September of this year.

Under the semen bank scheme, launched earlier this year with funding from the Tubney Charitable Trust, semen will be collected from rams nominated by each breed.

Semen collection will be undertaken by CBS Technologies at their Malvern, Worcs, site and will be under the management of general manager John Yates.

"We are pleased to be supporting the RBST in this project and it follows on from our work last year, freezing semen on farm from breeds which were threatened by foot-and-mouth culling," says Mr Yates.

RBST chief executive, Rosemary Mansbridge, told a meeting of breed society representatives that it was now up to them to use the scheme as fully as they could.

"By obtaining this money, RBST is able to put together a unique collection of rare breeds semen. But we will be unable to succeed if breed societies do not put forward rams for collection," says Ms Mansbridge. &#42
