This crop of Crescendo is growing on a silty loam near Bridgewater, on the edge of the Somerset Levels. Barely above sea level, it receives high levels of rainwash from the nearby Quantocks. It was drilled at 45,000 seeds/acre on June 11 without fertiliser and established rapidly. It received a total of 80kg/ha (100 units/acre) of N, and by Aug 29, cobs were fully developed and beginning to ripen. Standing at about 2.1m (7ft) in height, the anticipated harvest date is early October.
Win £1000 worth of forage maize seed
FARMERS WEEKLY, in association with Advanta UK, is giving away £1000* worth of forage maize seed every week for the next four weeks – and you can enter each week to increase your chances of winning.
Entering the competition is simple. Use your skill and the agronomic information provided to guess the yield of the maize field shown in the photo.
Four winners will be able to select £1000 worth of forage maize from any Advanta variety available commercially in the UK, such as Hudson, Lincoln, Melody, Fabius, Orient, Andante, Renard, Sonnet, Serenade or Ivory.
The yield of all crops will be calculated from a sample at harvest and winners notified by late October. In the event of more than one correct entry, the tie-break question requires you to estimate the crops starch percentage.
*Price based on 2001 RRPs. *
