USING recorded rams with high indexes as flock sires can generate an extra £2 a lamb.

According to results of a farm trial run as part of the Highlands and Islands Sheep Strategy, 16 week old lambs from high index sires were 2kg heavier, had 2.3mm more muscle and were 0.14mm leaner than average lambs.

Lambs sired by high index tups finished six days earlier than average lambs. At slaughter, their carcasses were 0.9kg heavier, with a killing out percentage 1.1% better. &#42
