Research merger

TWO leading UK arable research organisations have announced that they are in merger talks.

If successful, Norfolk-based Morley Research Centre and NIAB could merge by next spring.

"We have a regional network of research centres which would provide the basis for Morley to go national," says NIAB chief executive Brian Legg.

Morley would bring farm management and day-to-day agronomy advice to the new organisation, while NIAB would offer greater scientific depth in areas such as plant pathology.

"This is not a cost-cutting exercise. We both believe we could offer a more efficient service," he says.

Morley director Jim Orson agrees. "We have been in serious talks for some time. Now we have to declare our hand to gauge our members reaction and really evaluate the business case." &#42
