Retailer bans genetically modified soya

FROZEN-FOOD retailer Iceland is to ban genetically modified soya from its 770 UK stores

Opposition to GM soya has waned over the past few months, despite consumer antagonism. The British Retail Consortium backed down in January from its previous stance of insisting US soya producers segregate the GM crop from non-modified varieties.

European Union scientists insist GM soya is safe but Dr Michael Antoniou, a lecturer in molecular biology at a London hospital, warns that once it is released into the environment, it cannot be withdrawn.
