RSPB urges continuing organic support

FARMERS who convert to organic systems should continue to receive state support, claims the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).

It told a House of Commons select committee that payments should reflect the social, economic and environmental benefits which organic farming brings.

The RSPB told the committee that traditional farming had received billions of pounds worth of subsidy over the years but rural communities and the environment were worse off.

The organisation suggested the government should push for 5% of farmland to be managed organically by 2005.
