ALIEN plant and animal species will be subject to fresh curbs under the forthcoming Rural White Paper, claims The Independent.

The newspaper says ministers are considering making the eradication of aggressive foreign plants and animals compulsory

Mink, which can decimate poultry, Japanese knotweed and the New Zealand flatworm, which eats British earthworms, crucial for soil aeration, could be targeted.

Laws may also be introduced to remove animals such as hedgehogs from areas where they have been introduced with disastrous effects on local bird populations.

The Rural White Paper is expected to be published by the end of November.
