School boost for cereal products

IMPROVING the image of cereal and flour-based foods is the aim of a new educational programme for schools planned by UK cereal and milling organisations.

The Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA) and Flour Advisory Bureau (FAB) are funding a joint venture involving the launch of a new website and the distribution of teachers packs

The project, which is the first of its kind for the cereals sector, is aimed at teachers and pupils across the UK.

Rebecca Geraghty of the HGCA said many food products were far devolved from their original source.

“It is important for people to understand where their food comes from,” she said.

“We are seizing this opportunity to set the record straight by dispelling some of the myths and helping them to develop good nutritional knowledge and habits.”

Alex Waugh of FAB said the organisations had joined forces to pool resources so that they could provide accurate information to the consumers of tomorrow.

“We believe it is important for industry, society and the future of rural Britain that children understand the complex relationship between the countryside, manufacturing processes and the food on their plates.”
