‘Scientists are food safety scapegoats’

SCIENTISTS have become an easy scapegoat for public concerns about food, notably mad-cow disease and genetically modified (GM) crops.

A contributor to the science section of The Independent argues that scientists have been unfairly maligned in both instances.

He argues the issue is about trust and knowledge, which depends on everyone “sticking to the rules on quality control and full disclosure of what is in the food”.

He says the main lesson to be learned from recent concerns over BSE and GM crops is that “openness is all”.
