Scientists reproduce CJD in a test tube

BRITISH scientists have succeeded in reproducing in a test tube the changes that lead to “mad cow” disease and Creuzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD).

A team at the Imperial College School of Medicine has shown that breaking a single bond in the prion protein molecule is enough to trigger the change.

The discovery could lead to better tests for CJD and ultimately to drugs able to treat the disease.
