Scientists step up tests
after genetic furore
SCIENTISTS at the Rowett Research Institute are to carry out further tests in an attempt to prove a link between genetically modified potatoes and damage to the human immune system.
The institute was at a centre of a storm earlier in the week when one of its senior scientists claimed to have found a link between potatoes carrying lectin genetic material and damage to the immune system of rats.
The professors comments were found to have no experimental support. He was subsequently sacked.
The institute is now playing down its work, saying the experiments are in their infancy and the hint of an effect may yet turn out to have no significance.
But it confirmed, the result would be more significant than the potato experiments that triggered the furore earlier this week.
