Scot buyers dominate ewe trade

DEMAND for Suffolk in-lamb ewes from the Aberdeenshire-based Muiresk and Cairness flocks was "sensible" according to auctioneer United Auctions.

Prices at Perth reached 2000gns for the last gimmer in this annual production sale from two of the countrys leading Suffolk flocks.

Despite foot-and-mouth movement restrictions several buyers travelled from England to swell a large crowd.

Scottish bidders were able to take newly purchased stock home and consequently dominated the trade. Even so, several Cumbrian and Welsh buyers were in action although their sheep will remain on a holding unit in Scotland until they are allowed to travel south.

Top call came from David Darling, Ladyflat, Duns, Berwickshire, for a gimmer from Aberdeenshire breeder Jimmy Douglas Cairness consignment. Mr Darling lost his own flock in a contiguous cull in May.

The gimmer is by the 16,000gns tup Cairness The King – a son of 68,000gns breed record holder Cairness King of Diamonds – and out of a ewe by Stockton Almighty. It is in-lamb to Glenho Genereux, which was bred in the Irish flock of Tom Bailey.

Business as usual

F&M victims were using the opportunity to snap up stock with the intention of being back in business with a new lamb crop in six weeks time.

Buying new foundation females were Lockerbie breeders W and A Hutchon who gave 1550gns for another gimmer from Mr Douglas by Cairness The King to re-establish their Evandale flock.

This one is in-lamb to Cairness Capello, a son of Muiresk Rainbow Quest, which sold to Muiresk at the breed societys mid-summer video ram sale at Perth for 20,000gns.

Cairness sold another gimmer in-lamb to the Glenho sire at 1000gns. The gimmer is by Cairness Return and out of a Muiresk King of Diamonds ewe and was bought by David Steel for his Westend flock at Kilbride, Lanarkshire.

Northern Ireland breeder David Duncan added another Cairness gimmer by Cairness The King to his Laurelbank flock in Co Antrim at 800gns. This one was also in-lamb to the Glenho sire.

Mr and Mrs Hutchon made the two highest bids to secure ewes from a small draft from Cairness. One was a Muiresk King Diamonds ewe in-lamb to Fordafourie President (a 17,000gns ram owned jointly with the Glenisla flock), which was partnered by a daughter of Stockton Stardust served by Capello.

Stockton Almighty has worked well in the Mair familys Muiresk flock and it was one of his daughters that topped their section at 1200gns. The gimmer was in-lamb to Rainbow Quest and was bought by Miss J McNeillie, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire.

A Muiresk gimmer by Cairness The King and in-lamb to Glenho Godolphin ram made 800gns to A D Nelson, Castle Douglas. Godolphins first progeny sold to 9000gns at the video ram sale.

Averages: Cairness – 17 ewes £453 and 24 gimmers £537; Muiresk – 45 gimmers £404. (United Auctions). &#42
