Scots co-op milk is 100% assured

ALL the milk sold to processors by dairy farmers co-operative Scottish Milk now comes from farm assured herds.

The Scottish Milk Animal Welfare and Quality Assurance Code of Practice was launched more than three years ago, with on-farm audits starting a year later.

Of the 1500 members, only about 20 have failed to reach the farm assurance standards. Although milk from those units is still being collected, it is being kept separate and the producers involved are incurring penalties of about 10p/litre.

A Scottish Milk spokesman said this arrangement would continue for a maximum of three months. Thereafter, anyone without farm assured status would not be able to market milk through the co-op.
