Scots farmers suffer their worst 12 months

THE HERALD reports on the plight of Scottish farmers over the past 12 months.

It finds a situation where many farmers have had to borrow heavily while seeing their incomes plummet. To cap a long line of problems, from bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) to the strength of the Pound, this summer has proved one of the wettest ever, making the harvest especially difficult.

  • The newspaper profiles a couple who have developed their farm on the Scottish borders to become a guest house and computer training centre. The Glenholm Centre, on the border between Lanarkshire and Tweeddale, is a £200,000 investment which has received £25,000 from the Rural Diversification Programme.
