Scots meat processors wary of export market

SCOTTISH meat processors are showing no great desire to rush back into the export market, claims The Herald.

It reports that Robert Forster, chief executive of the National Beef Association, has been disappointed by the response of his industry to the lifting of the export ban.

Scottish meat wholesalers have plans to form a joint venture company which will run a plant dedicated to the export trade, but the plant has not yet been named.

The move is designed to address a European Union requirement that plants catering for the export trade cannot also be involved in the domestic market.

St Merryn Meats in Cornwall is vying with Linden Foods in Northern Ireland to be first into overseas markets.

Don Curry, chairman of the Meat and Livestock Commission, said at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate he believes next year only 5000 tonnes of beef will be exported from the UK.
