Scots review merits of piglet teeth clipping

TEETH-CARE for piglets is detailed in a new guide* produced by the Scottish Pig Industry Initiative and the SAC.

The booklet aims to encourage producers to reassess their approach to teeth clipping, says author, SACs Jamie Robertson.

It examines the arguments for and against clipping and provides guidance on how to assess when it is necessary.

It also outlines legislation and welfare code recommendations, and includes a section on the reasons for clipping – giving analysis of scientific research on the subject.

Knowing when teeth-clipping is necessary will ensure better use of farmers time, result in less damage to teeth and potentially reduce piglet mortality, says Mr Robertson.

The booklet will be distributed free to SPII members and available through BOCM Pauls or SAC on 01224-711055.

*The booklet is the second in a series – the first covered tail biting – of free management guides from BOCM Pauls.
