Seafood, not bananas, heads Panama’s earners

THE Financial Times reports that seafood has overtaken bananas as Panamas main export commodity.

Banana exports were worth $98 million (£59m) in the first nine months of 1998,. but are being affected by the US trade wrangle with the European Union.

Panama is one of five banana-growing countries which, together with the USA, won a World Trade Organisation ruling against the European Unions preferential treatment of banana producers in former British and French colonies.

The issue is yet to be resolved and is affecting production.
