Second attempt at NFUS post

THE Herald profiles Fife farmer Peter Stewart, who is pitching to win a vice-presidents post at the National Farmers Union of Scotland. He made an unsuccessful attempt for the job last year.

Mr Stewart is a tenant of 242.8ha (600 acres) at Urquhart farm, near Dunfermline. He was president of the Fife and Kinross area before the union restructured.

He remains optimistic that the unions new structure will encourage members to participate in the union. But he says that the union will have to be able to justify its subscription rates to members.

On a broader scale, he still believes in government support for the industry, taking as his model the USA where, he says, farmers are receiving central government support.
