See stalls ban as opportunity
PIG producers should not ignore the stalls and tethers ban but seize the opportunity to update pig businesses.
Chairman of pig breeders Newsham Hybrid Pigs, Ian Brisby, says any planning to ignore the ban should learn from the experience of egg producers.
"Those who ignored the 1995 regulations on poultry cages have been tracked down by MAFF inspectors and forced to comply."
He says the same will apply for pig producers who try to continue production using banned systems.
Instead he says the whole business – its strengths and weaknesses, meat quality, growth rates, and building design – must be examined now so investments can be planned in time and made to improve the efficiency of all areas of the business.n
